This ancient hymn is a note of hopeful anticipation that our troubled modern world may one day see "envy, strife and quarrels cease". We wish you all peace, love and joy.
(O Come, O Come, Emmanuel is a Christian hymn for Advent and Christmas. It is a translation of a Latin hymn, Veni, Veni, Emmanuel, itself a metrical paraphrase of the O Antiphons, a series of plainchant antiphons used at Vespers of the last seven days of Advent in Western Christian (Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, Presbyterian) traditions. They are referred to as the "O Antiphons" because the title of each one begins with "O".)
lyrics
Veni, veni Emmanuel!
Captivum solve Israel!
Qui gemit in exilio,
Privatus Dei Filio,
Gaude, gaude, Emmanuel
nascetur pro te, Israel
O come, Desire of the nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind;
Bid envy, strife and quarrels cease;
And fill the whole world with heaven’s peace.
Rejoice! Rejoice! O Israel
To thee shall come Emmanuel
O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here,
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! O Israel
To thee shall come Emmanuel
